According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired, 90% of whom live in developing countries. Globally, less than half of children from this population receive an education. A large portion of them are in impoverished areas of south Asia, and most of them are excluded from education because of their disability. According to UNESCO, if all students in low income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty. That’s equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty. While it might be a challenge, living with a visual impairment or other reading barrier doesn’t mean people have to be cut off from learning and a brighter future!
