Support Bookshare Global
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired, 90% of whom live in developing countries. Globally, less than half of children from this population receive an education. A large portion of them are in impoverished areas of south Asia, and most of them are excluded from education because of their disability. According to UNESCO, if all students in low income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty. That’s equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty. While it might be a challenge, living with a visual impairment or other reading barrier doesn’t mean people have to be cut off from learning and a brighter future!
Benetech is working hard to ensure the millions of learners in South Asia with reading barriers (including blindness, low vision, and dyslexia) have a chance to get free access to the world’s largest library of accessible ebooks – Bookshare.
With Bookshare, readers in over 70 countries can explore, listen and follow along with more than 400,000 titles in 34 languages. Bookshare’s digital ebooks empower all students to read in ways that work for them.
