Advancing Accessibility in an AI-Driven Future: Highlights from CSUN 2026

Based on insights from Charles LaPierre, Principal, Accessibility & Content Quality Architect at Benetech

Earlier this month, Benetech joined global accessibility leaders at the CSUN Accessibility Conference 2026, one of the premier gatherings focused on assistive technology and inclusive innovation. Representing Benetech, Principal Accessibility and Content Quality Architect Charles LaPierre engaged in conversations, led sessions, and connected with partners across industries, all centered on one shared goal: building a more accessible digital future.

Leading the Conversation on Title II Readiness

A key highlight of Benetech’s presence at CSUN was Charles’ session, “Title II: Adapting W3C APA Note A11y Maturity Model for Schools.” With more than 30 attendees and strong engagement following the presentation, the session underscored a growing urgency among schools and institutions to prepare for upcoming ADA Title II compliance deadlines.

The interest extended well beyond the session itself. Attendees from institutions such as California State University and the University of Tokyo expressed interest in Benetech’s tools and frameworks, particularly around accessibility maturity models, document templates, and emerging solutions like Bookshare+ and PageAI.

This response reflects a broader shift. Organizations are moving away from short-term fixes and toward sustainable, system-level accessibility strategies. As compliance deadlines approach, many are seeking not just guidance, but scalable solutions that integrate accessibility from the start.

Building Connections Across the Ecosystem

Beyond presenting, CSUN provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships and explore new partnerships. Charles connected with leaders from organizations including Amazon, eBay, and McDonald’s, as well as accessibility advocates, researchers, and longtime collaborators.

These conversations highlighted a growing demand for structured accessibility standards and certification models like Benetech’s Global Certified Accessible (GCA) program. They also reinforced the value of ongoing collaboration across sectors, from publishing and education to technology and legal advocacy.

We were also proud to connect with Benetech Board Member Judy Dixon during the conference. As a longtime advocate for accessible reading, Judy’s presence underscored the deep expertise and shared commitment that drives Benetech’s work forward.

Key Trends Shaping the Future of Accessibility

CSUN 2026 made one thing clear: accessibility is entering a new era, one increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and evolving user needs.

1. The Rise of the “Agent-First” Web
A recurring theme across sessions was the idea that the web is shifting from a visual experience to a data-driven one. In the near future, users may rely on personal AI agents to interpret and re-render content based on their individual needs. This shift places greater emphasis on structured, machine-readable content, moving accessibility beyond interface design and into the foundation of how information is built and delivered.

2. Addressing Bias in AI Systems
As AI becomes more embedded in accessibility workflows, there is growing concern about the data it is trained on. With much of today’s web content still inaccessible, AI systems risk replicating and scaling existing barriers. The need for strong standards, guardrails, and human oversight is more critical than ever to ensure that innovation leads to inclusion, not exclusion.

3. From Quick Fixes to Long-Term Strategy
Another major takeaway was the shift away from “overlay” solutions toward integrated, long-term approaches. Organizations are increasingly adopting “shift-left” strategies, embedding accessibility into development processes from the beginning rather than retrofitting later. This aligns closely with Benetech’s approach to accessibility as a continuous, systemic practice.

The Role of AI, and the Human Element

While AI-powered tools are rapidly advancing, a consistent message throughout the conference was that automation alone is not enough. AI can identify issues, suggest fixes, and scale workflows, but it cannot replace human judgment, context, or lived experience.

The most effective accessibility strategies will be those that combine the speed and scale of AI with the insight and expertise of people. This balance is essential to ensuring that digital experiences are not just technically compliant, but genuinely usable and inclusive.

Looking Ahead

As Title II enforcement begins and accessibility expectations continue to evolve, Benetech is well positioned to support organizations navigating this complex landscape. The strong interest in our work at CSUN, from accessibility maturity models to next generation solutions like Bookshare+, signals a growing recognition of the need for thoughtful, scalable approaches to inclusion.

Conferences like CSUN are more than moments to share progress. They are opportunities to listen, learn, and align on what comes next. For Benetech, that means continuing to lead with innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to equitable access to information and education for all.
