Christopher Lohse
With expertise in educational research, strategy, and governmental affairs, Chris serves as our chief of staff. Chris served as chief of staff at Learning Ally, where he helped lead strategy development, organizational transformation, major initiatives and partnership outreach. Prior to that, he was the chief academic officer at Teachers1on1, a tutoring startup based in Los Angeles. There, he played a key role not only in developing the scholastic tools and organizational learning models for the organization, but also its go-to market plan and its efforts to fundraise. Chris served as the CEO and managing partner of Chartwell Hamilton, a boutique international education consulting firm, leading to major university collaborations for world-leading UK and US universities in both China and the Middle East. He led the professional association of education technology companies and previously held VP roles at both Pearson and Renaissance Learning, where he directed research, strategy, and government affairs. He has also advised the Montana legislature on science and education issues, served as an assistant superintendent in the Montana state education agency, and led major policy research for organizations like the National Conference of State Legislatures and Teach for America. A lifelong educator, Chris taught science education and policy programs at Harvard, Yale, and the University of California, and began his career teaching high school chemistry and physics in Los Angeles through the Teach for America program, where he earned multiple teaching awards.
Outside of his professional roles, Chris is passionate about history, antiques, and creative pursuits, including drawing and painting. He has a strong interest in the arts, and likes to stay as active as possible, whether cycling, golfing or hiking. Chris earned undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry from Willamette University, and master’s degrees in policy and education from Harvard University. A dual citizen of the UK and the US, he also loves to travel and (regrettably) overindulge in the varied cuisines of the world.
