EdTech and the Promise of Quality Education for All: On the Americans with Disabilities Act at Twenty-Five

Twenty-five years ago, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. We have come a long way in eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities, but as we join the week-long recognition of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the ADA, it is imperative to consider how to extend the ADA promise to a new generation of Americans. The 25th anniversary of the ADA is a reminder that, at their best, policy and legislation support technological advances as well as benefits to society. We now need such balanced laws more than ever in order to stay committed to core principles of inclusion in the midst of massive technological change. To carry forward the ADA promise, we need regulations that mitigate these risks and still enable our students to benefit from the tools they need to succeed at school and beyond.

How the Benetech Human Rights Program Helps Advance LGBTI Rights in Southern Africa

The Benetech Human Rights team has recently returned from Johannesburg, where we convened multiple Southern African partner organizations in the LGBTI community whom we have been supporting in establishing human rights documentation initiatives. We were very excited to organize this event, as it is the culmination of a four-year, collective effort to build a culture of systematic, evidence-based documentation of human rights violations against LGBTI individuals in Southern Africa.

Open Innovation & Tech-for-Good: Benetech at NewCo Silicon Valley

At Benetech, we always seek new opportunities to strengthen existing ties and establish new contacts with our community. We were therefore delighted to partner with the NewCo business festival and proud to have been selected as a host company in the 2015 NewCo Silicon Valley, which was held earlier this month. The session we hosted, led by Vice President of Benetech Labs, Anh Bui, focused on open innovation and tech-for-good, and included demos of our MathML Cloud and 3D Printing for Education projects, which received excellent feedback from our audience.
