CEO’s Update: Spring 2014

10X: ten times the impact. That’s what’s been on my mind lately. How can our existing successful programs reach ten times more people? How can we use technology in a new way to improve people’s lives that is an order of magnitude better? Can we help stimulate the creation of far more technology-for-good ventures? At Benetech, we want to help lead the charge into a future where the advantages of digital information touch the lives of all people, not just of the richest and most able five percent of humanity. As always, I’m delighted to share the latest Benetech highlights as we work on these ambitious 10X dreams!

FJC Supports Innovation at Benetech

I’m delighted to share that FJC—a New York-based foundation of donor advised funds—has recently made two philanthropic commitments that build unrestricted support for Benetech. The first is a $50,000 matching challenge-grant, the second a $350,000, five-year term endowment. This level of recognition from FJC is a great honor and we are deeply grateful for their helping us address our most significant philanthropic need.

Benetech Labs Brainstorm

We kicked off 2014 in Benetech Labs by convening our inaugural Labs brainstorm meeting. It was a delight to bring together a great group of leaders from the technology, philanthropy, social innovation and education sectors—for a deep-dive on two of our pipeline projects. The first is a clean water project, in collaboration with Avina, a Latin American foundation that advances sustainable development in the region. The second Labs pipeline project that we examined was 3D print-on-demand for students.
