Benetech’s Bookshare and Mathshare initiatives to be featured at OSEP’s Showcase on Technology Innovations in Special Education and ED Games Expo

The 7th Annual ED Games Expo, on January 9 and 10, 2020, will showcase more than 140 government-supported educational games and technologies. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) are hosting three events at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

First Event Showcases Technology Innovations in Special Education

The first event, Showcase on Technology Innovations in Special Education, takes place on January 9 from 1:30-4:30 pm and is a forum for special education developers, researchers, and organizations who receive funding from the Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and Health and Human Services. Representatives from nonprofit advocacy organizations, industry partners, and practitioners will also participate. The showcase will include provocative “Big Idea” talks on innovations in assistive technologies that support learning and instruction for students with disabilities as well as models for adoption of research-based interventions in special education settings.

Second Event Features ED Games Expo

The ED Games Expo runs from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on January 9 and gives the public an opportunity to explore educational games and technologies covering a range of topics such as early learning, science, engineering, making, math, reading, social studies, English language learning, and social skills that support students with or at risk for disabilities.

Benetech will demonstrate Bookshare, the world’s largest library of accessible ebooks for students with reading barriers. In addition, Benetech’s DIAGRAM Center, an R&D center that leverages emerging technology and community engagement to support different learning needs and improve access to educational materials, will present Mathshare , an inclusive problem solving tool that allows students to show their work and is accessible to all learners. Bookshare and the DIAGRAM Center are both funded by OSEP.

Third Event Invites Attendees to Office Hours

On Friday, January 10, attendees can meet more than thirty representatives from government programs and national educational organizations to gain information about funding opportunities and learn about initiatives of interest led by these organizations.
