How can we use technology to help social entrepreneurs collect and use their data more effectively and securely? We are exploring this in Benetech Labs. The solution we have been exploring is a semi-customized, open source, secure, data collection and analysis application that makes it easier for social sector users to safely gather and use information more efficiently.

Palo Alto, California, May 14, 2014—Benetech is pleased to announce that it has appointed technologist and social entrepreneur Kushal Chakrabarti as Senior Advisor to Benetech Labs, where the Benetech team and partners prototype, iterate, and test new software-for-good applications. Kushal is the founder and co-chairman of Vittana, an award-winning nonprofit that fights youth poverty in developing countries. Drawing on his experience as a serial entrepreneur, he will provide Benetech CEO, Jim Fruchterman, and the senior management team strategic guidance and insight on Benetech Labs.

Digital Equity and Individual Rights in the Age of Big Data: Highlights from the Skoll World Forum

How can we maximize the positive aspects of the data revolution for social change while managing its potential downsides? This was the main theme of the panel, Digital Equity and Rights in the Age of Big Data at this year’s annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship.
