San Francisco Chronicle Names Jim Fruchterman Among Top Innovators

The San Francisco Chronicle featured our CEO, Jim Fruchterman, among a select number of top social entrepreneurs championing positive social change.

The article, titled “Meet the Innovators,” recounts Benetech’s story: how Jim saw his visionary idea of building a reading machine for the blind, from his days at Caltech, as a classic example of technology that could be used for social good but was passed over because no one saw a profit to be made of it; how he didn’t give up on the idea and in 1989 founded Benetech as a nonprofit to build that reading machine for the blind; and how Benetech has grown to include multiple program areas and initiatives that provide technology to improve the lives of people all across the world.
