This is an extraordinary time to be focused on technology in the service of social good. New apps and tools are being developed every day to help solve the world’s most pressing challenges, from education and environment to health and poverty. We’re thrilled to see so much energy and creativity being dedicated to this “technology-for-good” global movement, especially during pioneering events like Taproot Foundation’s Pro Bono Week! Meet Our Google Summer of Code 2013 Students—Part 3

My name is Anuruddha Hettiarachchi and I am a senior at the University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka majoring in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering. My Google Summer of Code 2013 project was to integrate Benetech’s Go Read tool and “Tecla Access.” Making Go Read Tecla-accessible will greatly improve its usability for people who cannot read standard eBooks due to mobility impairments. This was my first experience with open source development and I had the opportunity to learn how much collaboration and teamwork are central to real world open source software projects. It was a pleasure to work with such a flexible and supportive team as Benetech’s Google Summer of Code crew.

Upstart Business Journal Names Jim Fruchterman Among “Genius Grant” Winners Turned Entrepreneurs

Upstart Business Journal mentioned our CEO, Jim Fruchterman, among a handful of MacArthur Fellows who are also startup entrepreneurs. The story notes that, while many MacArthur Fellows are academics who remain largely unknown to the rest of the world, at least a handful took their prizes and started companies.
